Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, has presented the Dubai-it Award in the economy category to SWS Board Technology, a Dubai-based manufacturer that produces roughly a third of the world's snowboards and nearly half of all kiteboards and wakeboards made globally — an unlikely feat for a company based in the desert.
The firm has sold more than six million boards internationally to date, with an annual production capacity now exceeding 450,000 units. Its boards have even been used in Winter Olympic competitions, underscoring the technical quality behind a brand few would expect to originate from the Gulf.
Founder Rainier Nouhra built the company around an integrated model that brings research and development, engineering, manufacturing, quality control and global distribution together under one roof. Sustainability is also central to the operation: SWS Board Technology recycles close to 95 per cent of its board materials, feeding them back into new production and supporting a circular manufacturing approach.
Presenting the award, Sheikh Hamdan described the achievement as the embodiment of the "Dubai-it" spirit — spotting opportunity where others see none. He noted that a major snowboard and kiteboard operation rising out of a desert city illustrates Dubai's ability to turn geographic limitations into a competitive edge.
The award is part of the broader Dubai-it initiative, which annually recognises innovative and high-performing businesses across different sectors of the emirate's economy. SWS Board Technology's win adds to a growing list of examples showing how Dubai's economic diversification extends even into unexpected manufacturing niches far removed from its traditional trade, tourism and finance strengths.
