Education consultants in the UAE are warning that even minor legal or behavioural offences can now put US student visa applications at risk, as American consular officers adopt a far stricter review process than in previous years.

Michael Gamerl, head counsellor for career and college counselling at Score Plus Educational Consulting Institute, said the shift in approach among US visa officers has been significant. In the past, he explained, a minor misstep by a teenager might have been viewed as part of growing up and learning from a mistake. Today, he said, a "zero tolerance" policy means that same minor issue can be enough to deny a visa outright.

Ritu, director of Score Plus, added that UAE-based families should be fully aware of any legal history involving their children, however small, before applying for a US student visa, and should disclose it to education consultants early so they are not caught off guard during the application process.

The warning comes as some families in the UAE reconsider prioritising US universities for their children, citing growing anxiety over the unpredictability and strictness of the visa process. Some are said to be shifting focus toward alternative study destinations such as the UK, Canada and Australia.

Education consultants are advising families to approach the US student visa process with complete transparency, seeking detailed guidance and disclosing every element of an applicant's record to consular officers, no matter how minor it may seem, since omissions discovered later can lead to outright refusal or lengthy delays in visa processing.
