The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has imposed a Dh15,000 fine on a plastic and paper manufacturing facility in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) after inspectors found it had breached environmental regulations. According to the agency, the facility released heavy air pollutants during its operations and failed to fully implement the emission-control measures required under its environmental permit.
Inspectors also flagged deteriorating conditions in the facility's storage silos, which raised the risk of leaks and further contamination if left unaddressed. The agency said the penalty is part of its ongoing enforcement programme across ICAD, one of Abu Dhabi's most industrially dense zones.
"Reducing emissions improves air quality and limits the exposure of community members and workers to pollutants," EAD said in its statement announcing the fine.
Following the penalty, the facility has carried out corrective measures and addressed the causes of the violation, the agency confirmed. This is the second such case in the area in recent months: in July, a similar facility in ICAD was fined Dh25,000 for failing to implement emission-reduction measures.
Abu Dhabi has stepped up monitoring of industrial operators in recent years, with EAD regularly publishing the outcomes of its inspections to increase transparency in environmental enforcement. The approach reflects the emirate's broader push to raise air-quality standards in heavily industrialised zones such as ICAD, where dozens of manufacturing plants operate in close proximity to residential communities.
