After years of making history with an ATM that dispensed pure gold bars and coins, Dubai has now invented a similar automated machine that tells you whether your gold is pure or not. 💎
On Monday, the Dubai Municipality unveiled a groundbreaking automated device that acts as a complete laboratory unit, capable of testing the purity of gold jewelry in less than a minute.
This unique technology was showcased at the Dubai Municipality booth during the GITEX Global 2025 exhibition, which opened on Monday at the Dubai World Trade Center.
The world's first smart gold and jewelry testing laboratory
This prototype, named the "Smart Gold and Jewelry Testing Laboratory," represents a qualitative leap in consumer support and service provision in the precious metals sector.
A spokesperson for the Dubai Municipality stated, "This laboratory utilizes the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and machine learning to expedite testing processes while enhancing their efficiency and accuracy, providing results in less than a minute." ⚡
This automated laboratory tests the purity of gold and other precious metals.
Consumers can receive results via SMS or printed receipt, just like how transactions are confirmed by ATMs.
The report displays the metallic content as a percentage, including gold, silver, copper, zinc, and others, if present.
A transformation in the UAE gold market
This innovation is designed to transform the way residents and tourists verify gold purchases in one of the world's most vibrant jewelry markets.
The spokesperson added, "This innovation enhances consumer trust and elevates the quality of services in the gold and jewelry sector."
Unmatched speed and convenience
Dubai's gold market attracts millions of buyers annually, and the city's reputation as a gold trading hub is built on trust and quality assurance.
This technology reinforces that reputation by providing laboratory-level testing directly to consumers in an extraordinarily quick timeframe—compared to the traditional process through Dubai's central laboratory, which can take up to seven days.
The new automated model reflects the convenience of using an ATM, turning precious metal testing into a quick and hassle-free experience that can be completed during a shopping trip.
Installation in key locations 📍
According to the Dubai Municipality, the strategic plan includes placing these smart devices in key locations throughout the city, including the iconic Gold Souq and major shopping centers.
This easy access allows residents and tourists to test the purity of their gold jewelry in a faster and more convenient manner, eliminating the need to visit traditional testing centers or wait several days for results.
The Dubai Municipality had previously signed a memorandum of understanding with the Dubai Gold and Jewelry Group to provide precious metal testing services in the new gold market. At that time, the municipal entity announced that it expected customers, including gold traders and ordinary individuals, to benefit from these services.
