Sharjah's Ruler, Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, announced plans for a new women-only tower opposite the Kalba Clock Tower, close to the University of Kalba, during his regular live call-in programme "Direct Line" on Tuesday.
The Ruler said the project is intended to ease overcrowding of men, women and children at the area's existing tower, which has become a popular gathering spot for local families. Alongside the dedicated women's tower, the new development will include landscaped gardens, extensive parking, and a covered hall equipped for various games and recreational activities.
The announcement continues a pattern seen in Sharjah's "Direct Line" programme, through which Sheikh Sultan periodically responds directly to residents' requests and suggestions, often leading to new infrastructure and community projects across the emirate, including in its eastern coastal towns such as Kalba.
No timeline, budget or capacity figures for the new tower have been released yet, with further details expected from Sharjah's relevant authorities in the coming period. Kalba, located on the UAE's east coast near the Gulf of Oman, has seen growing investment in tourism and community infrastructure in recent years, with the expansion of the University of Kalba contributing to the area's development.
The move adds to a broader push by Sharjah in recent years to expand a network of gender-specific public facilities, including women-only beaches, parks and gyms, aimed at making public amenities more accessible to all segments of the community. Residents in the eastern region have welcomed the announcement.
