Dubai Police rolled out a citywide awareness campaign on Saturday aimed at cutting road accidents and encouraging safer behaviour from both pedestrians and drivers. Under the initiative, anyone caught crossing at an undesignated spot or ignoring a pedestrian signal faces a Dh400 fine under Article 89 of the UAE's Federal Traffic Law.
Brigadier Majid Sultan Al Suwaidi, Director of the General Department of Police Stations, said the campaign is being run jointly with the General Department of Traffic across police station jurisdictions in Dubai. Officers are stationed at busy crossings to guide pedestrians in person, while motorists are being urged to slow down and stay alert near marked crossings.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in following traffic regulations," Brig Al Suwaidi said, urging pedestrians to use designated crossings, check for approaching traffic, and always obey pedestrian signals before stepping onto the road.
The move comes as Dubai pushes ahead with a broader road-safety drive. In recent weeks, authorities have revised speed limits on several roads and cracked down on vehicles fitted with illegal exhaust modifications that produce excessive noise. Officials say the pedestrian campaign fits into that wider strategy, which focuses on reducing accidents involving people on foot and reinforcing a culture of compliance with traffic rules.
Dubai's roads carry some of the heaviest daily traffic in the region, and pedestrian safety has become a growing focus for police as the city's population and visitor numbers continue to climb. The campaign has no set end date, suggesting enforcement and outreach will continue as part of routine traffic policing.
Residents and visitors are advised to familiarise themselves with marked crossing points, particularly around malls, metro stations, and residential areas where foot traffic is heaviest, to avoid fines and reduce the risk of accidents.
