Sharjah Municipality has unveiled the redesigned Al Taawun Roundabout, announcing that the project will open on November 4, 2026, coinciding with the Sharjah International Book Fair. The centrepiece of the project is a 500-metre underground tunnel with three lanes in each direction, linking Al Taawun Street to Al Nahda Bridge and the route into Dubai, with capacity for roughly 4,200 vehicles per hour in each direction during peak times. Officials said residents previously spent about 20 minutes navigating the roundabout during rush hour, and the completed project is expected to cut waiting times by up to 85 percent. Al Taawun Square, which also provides access to Expo Centre Sharjah, has long been one of the busiest traffic points between Sharjah and Dubai. The roundabout's well-known monument, a landmark for the area for years, has been temporarily removed and will be reinstalled at its original location once redesigned. The wider road project surrounding the roundabout is scheduled for full completion by February 2027. City officials describe the upgrade as part of a broader effort to ease congestion along the Sharjah-Dubai corridor, which carries heavy daily traffic between the two emirates.
