The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has expanded access to a digital version of the Emirates ID, letting residents and citizens pull up their identity on a smartphone instead of relying solely on the physical card. The feature is designed to help when the plastic card is lost, damaged or temporarily out of hand during renewal.
ICP outlines four ways to get the digital ID. On Apple devices, users can save their Emirates ID directly into Apple Wallet through the UAEICP app. A second option works across both Android and iOS: the UAE Pass app, the country's national digital identity platform, which lets holders view their ID details on any device. A third route is downloading a PDF copy through the UAEICP app for offline access when there is no internet connection. The fourth is generating a temporary QR code that can be scanned to verify identity during a transaction when the physical card isn't available.
The service is free of charge. Authorities say the digital ID is particularly useful for applying to services online or whenever showing physical identification isn't immediately possible, cutting down the friction of day-to-day administrative tasks.
The move fits into the UAE's broader push toward smart-government services, part of a years-long effort to shift citizen and resident transactions away from paper documents and physical cards toward verified digital credentials that can be used anywhere a smartphone is at hand.
