Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has opened a new facility called Dubai Mobility Labs at Dubai Silicon Oasis, dedicated to testing and validating autonomous vehicle technology before it is allowed onto public roads. The site includes multiple dedicated tracks and can run 248 different driving scenarios, combining controlled test environments with real-world routes that extend from Silicon Oasis to Al Qudra. Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the RTA, described the facility as one of the smartest integrated ground-testing centres of its kind in the region, calling it a key pillar supporting Dubai's Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy. The emirate has set a target of making 25 per cent of all mobility journeys autonomous by 2030, and officials say the new labs will play a central role in getting there by allowing driverless technology to be rigorously vetted locally rather than relying solely on trials conducted abroad. Management of the facility has been handed to Dekra, a German vehicle-testing firm, for its first three years of operation. Several companies already active in the autonomous vehicle space, including WeRide, Pony.ai and Tesla, have carried out successful trials at the site. The opening reflects Dubai's broader push to position itself as a global leader in autonomous mobility and smart urban transport, giving both local and international developers a dedicated space to refine their technology under Dubai's own conditions before wider rollout.
